Super SunDay : : BatMobile - Car Modification in Courts

Homemade Batmobiles must face riddles of copyright, judge rules

Just as no comic-book character has ever spawned quite as many vehicles as Batman, no custom car has ever been more copied by shade-tree builders than popular Batmobiles, from the George Barris TV era through the Michael Keaton years and including the modern Tumbler. All of which could be open to copyright infringement claims from DC Comics if a federal judge's ruling stands.
Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics and all things Batman, had sued Gotham Garage earlier this year in a California court, claiming the custom-car builder was churning out ersatz Batmobiles that could be confused as officially licensed. Gotham Garage asked for the case to be thrown out, noting that copyright law does not protect "useful items" -- which typically includes automobiles.
But in a ruling last week, U.S. District Judge Ronald Lew found that DC Comics could pursue its suit, under an exception that allows for copyright on artistic flourishes to everyday items.
"There may be non-functional artistic elements of the Batmobile that may possibly be separated from the utilitarian aspect of the automobile," Lew wrote, allowing the case to proceed.
Gotham Garage can still fight the case, and could argue that since so many copies of the various Batmobiles exist without challenge from DC Comics, the copyright has been weakened to the breaking point. But if DC Comics prevails, many proud drivers of copycat Batmobiles will face a few dark nights.

BASF and Hyundai show concept car in India

Aim to reduce weight as much as possible using innovative materials

Now, BASF isn’t exactly a new name in the automotive industry, but for the first time in India, they’ve unveiled a concept car made jointly by Hyundai Motor Corp and BASF, called the i-flow.

This concept aims to show the possibilities of using new materials in the construction of automobiles. Okay, maybe not completely new materials, but existing materials in new ways. Weight reduction was one of the main goals of the concept and they’ve managed to achieve that by using a lot of plastic components in place of metal counterparts. The seat frame, for example, is one area where the use of polymers, recycled materials and thermoplastics have resulted in significant weight loss. Most of the interior surfaces are made of a polymer called Elastollan which gives an abrasion-proof material in a variety of light to dark colours.

The engine is encased in a rigid foam that not only insulates and protects the engine, but also retains engine heat for a boost in efficiency. In the exhaust, there are thermoelectric converters which utilise the heat from the exhaust gases to power auxiliary systems.

The car also showcases various other BASF technologies like mirror-finish paints, synthetic soft-touch materials and the like. With techniques like this, a manufacturer can meet stringent emmisssions norms without completely redesigning a vehicle.

After Tata's Acquisition of British Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Mahindra & Mahindra Goes for SAAB

STOCKHOLM: Up to five companies, including an Indian firm, are keen to buy Saab, one of the bankrupt Swedish carmaker's three administrators said today.

"I can't comment on who we are in discussions with, but we are conducting dialogues with four to five interested parties who we consider are seriously interested," Hans Bergqvist told the TT news agency.

He said the aim was to sell all of Saab, which filed for bankruptcy on December 19, to a single buyer.
"That is our main tack (since) we... will get the most value," he said, adding that administrators were also looking at the possibility of selling off parts of the business piecemeal.
Chinese carmaker Youngman has shown keen interest but its bid to snap Saab up before it declared bankruptcy was thwarted by the Swedish brand's former owner GM, which balked at transferring the necessary technology licences.
A delegation from the Chinese company will reportedly arrive in Sweden tomorrow to try to hammer out a deal.
Indian commercial utility vehicles manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra is also interested and company officials have reportedly prolonged a visit to the Saab factory in the southwestern town of Trollhaettan to pursue talks.
Turkish private equity firm Brightwell Holdings has also expressed interest, with board member Samier Ahmed saying that "We will place a bid as soon as they (the administrators) are ready to accept bids."
Bergqvist said the administrators hope to have a deal in weeks.
"We have to (hurry) due to the economic situation we are in. To make it possible for someone to restart the activity again, we have to keep the factory in good shape, and that costs an incredible amount of money," he told TT.
Earlier this month, the administrators sold off the Saab museum to the town of Trollhaettan, for 28 million kronor (3.1 million euros, USD 4.2 million), he said.
Administrators are also trying to sell surplus stock of equipment like engines, he added.
Saab was already on the brink of bankruptcy when GM sold it in early 2010 to Dutch company Swedish Automobile (SWAN) -- at the time called Spyker -- for USD 400 million (308 million euros).
The past two years have been lined with desperate efforts and numerous failed deals to keep it afloat.

Truth of LIFE..... Sunday Special

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2007/04/03/nyregion/04teacher-600.jpg

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seemalmost too much to handle,
When 24 Hours in a day is not enough,
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class

and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students, if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar.   He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open Areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.  They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand.  The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor,   as the laughter subsided,
'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things - family,
children, health, Friends, and Favorite passions –
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, Your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else --The small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,'  He continued,
there is no room for  the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are important to you.

So...

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play With your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

'Take care of the golf balls first --
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.
'I'm glad you asked'.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

Please share this with other "Golf Balls"

I just did......
